Godzilla vs. Kong’s Adam Wingard Set To Direct ThunderCats Movie

After turning up US$123 million gross in 38 overseas markets over the weekends for the opening of his new film Godzilla vs. Kong, Director Adam Wingard is now set to direct ThunderCats.

ThunderCats was an iconic animated TV series that ran in the 80s produced by Rankin/Bass Animated Entertainment and had several other iterations follow after. The story tells the adventure of a team of cat-like humanoid aliens called the Third Earth who are being forced to leave their dying planet Thundera.

A film adaptation of the series was announced in 2007 with Jerry O’Flaherty as director but the film never got green-light and was never produced.

This new project is a revival of every fan’s dream by Warner Bros. and it will be developed by Rideback’s Dan Lin and Vertigo’s Roy Lee. Both of them were producers for Wingard’s Death Note. While using an early script by David Coggeshall, Wingard will rewrite a newer script with Simon Barrett with the entire movie being a hybrid of CGI and animation.

An interview with Deadline shows how much ThunderCats is Wingard’s passion project, so hopefully, he’ll do the classic animation right with a proper CGI, unlike CATS.
