‘Ghostbusters: Afterlife’ Sequel Continues Spengler Family Story, Code Name Reveals Legacy Link

More details have been revealed about the Ghostbusters: Afterlife sequel. Writer and director Jason Reitman took to Twitter to announce the location and code name of his sequel.

“The last time we saw Ecto-1, it was driving back into Manhattan: the home of Ghostbusters,” he revealed. “That’s where our story begins. The code name is FIREHOUSE.”

The upcoming sequel will follow Ecto-1 and return to the iconic Firehouse from Ghostbusters and Ghostbusters II. The movie will also explore the next chapter of the Spengler family story too.

That said, it is likely that the movie will see returning cast members from the first movie, including Finn Wolfhard and McKenna Grace, as Egon Spengler’s grandkids, Trevor and Grace. Carrie Coon may also return as Egon’s daughter Callie.

Whether or not Paul Rudd will return as Callie’s love interest, Gary Grooberson, remains to be seen. His appearance will likely depend on Marvel’s plans for Ant-Man in its upcoming MCU Phase 4 and beyond.

As for the original Ghostbusters, it is unclear if they will be back. Dan Aykroyd, Bill Murray, and Ernie Hudson’s appearance was easily the highlight of the movie and was an emotional experience for fans.

Ghostbusters: Afterlife follows a mother (Coon) and her two kids (Wolfhard and Grace) moving to Oklahoma, where the children discover their grandfather worked with the original Ghostbusters team. While exploring their family’s past, the children become part of a new generation of Ghostbusters that ends up fighting a world-threatening supernatural menace.

The movie was a big win with audiences and critics alike, earning a haunting US$60M at the international box office over its first weekend. After seeing its success, Sony Chairman Tom Rothman also came forward to inform fans that more Ghostbusters movies are coming.
