‘Aliens: Dark Descent’ Takes A Squad-Based Approach To Fighting Xenomorphs

What’s worse than a Xenomorph? A group of Xenomorphs. That’s why Aliens: Dark Descent doesn’t pit one fighter against them, but rather, brings out a whole squad to even things out.

Revealed at Summer Game Fest 2022 via a world premiere trailer, the new game is slated for release in 2023, and will follow a brand-new story that spotlights a new set of protagonists who will have to confront multiple Xenomorphs at once. The announcement trailer ends with the aliens starting to overwhelm the last Marine, before showing a brief snippet of top-down shooter gameplay.

The game is described as a “single-player, squad-based action game” that involves tactical, real-time combat mechanics, with an official press release offering more details: “Players will command a squad as one unit thanks to intuitive controls, allowing their Marines to automatically prioritize and execute complex actions in real-time, based on their respective skill sets and the environment around them. Navigate levels strategically, making sure to leverage the persistent and reactive environments to your advantage by sealing off checkpoints, unlocking shortcuts, or creating safe zones.”

It’s unclear how these Marines will be controlled and whether the game will support co-op, but it seems to draw from both the horror elements of Alien: Isolation and the combat-heavy shooting action of Aliens: Fireteam Elite.

Aliens: Dark Descent will release in 2023 for PC, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X|S. It is being co-developed by Focus Entertainment, 20th Century Fox Games, and Tindalos Interactive.
