Nostalgia Calls As 'Gargoyles Remastered' Brings Back 1995 Classic

‘Gargoyles’ Live-Action Series Coming To Disney+ From ‘Annabelle’ Writer

Gargoyles will live again. The animated series is getting a live-action reboot for Disney+ with horror maestros James Wan and Gary Dauberman.

Wan will be producing the series via his Atomic Monster label, while Dauberman (Annabelle Comes Home, The Nun II) will write it. Dauberman will also serve as executive producer alongside Wan.

The current logline for the project reads: “Based on the cult classic Disney animated series, Goliath is the last of a heroic race of gargoyle warriors who once lived among mankind. Free from a centuries long curse that turned him into stone, Goliath struggles to solve the mystery of his past while watching over modern-day New York City alongside police detective Elisa Maza.”

Gargoyles was originally created by Greg Weisman and Walt Disney Television Animation. It aired from 1994 to 1997 and was relatively dark for a Disney series. The premise follows a clan of gargoyles that awoken from a 1,000-year curse after their castle was transported from Scotland to Manhattan. Turning to stone during the day, the gargoyles come alive at night and protect The Big Apple from threats both human and supernatural.

The voice cast back then included Keith David (The Princess and the Frog), Salli Richardson (Anacondas: The Hunt for the Blood Orchid), Jonathan Frakes (Star Trek: First Contact), Marina Sirtis (Star Trek: Generations), Ed Asner (Up), Thom Adcox-Hernandez (Young Justice), Jeff Bennett (Enchanted), and Bill Fagerbakke (Spongebob Squarepants).

A live-action reboot of Gargoyles is not Disney’s first attempt at reviving the statues. A film adaptation was rumoured but never got off the ground. It was reported that the writers of G.I. Joe: Rise of the Cobra writers were hired to pen a script in 2011, and that Jordan Peele (Nope) was said to have pitched a Gargoyles movie in 2018.

The Gargoyles live-action series is one of Disney+‘s many family-friendly horror in recent years. It released a Marvel Cinematic Universe horror special last year – Werewolf by Night – and premiered the Goosebumps reboot this October.

Aside from this live-action series, Gargoyles fans can look forward to a comic run in 2024 and a Gargoyles Remastered video game set to arrive on 19 October this year.
