Five Nights at Freddy’s Producer Jason Blum Wants To Adapt More Games Into Horror Movies

Things are just getting started with the upcoming Five Nights at Freddy’s movie, according to producer Jason Blum. While bringing frights is expected of the horror genre veteran and his outfit, Blumhouse Productions, he has expressed interest in delivering a different kind of scare — one that stems from video games.

Speaking to Discussing Film, Blum shared his excitement at adapting more game into horror movies if the opportunity arises. “Well, I think the right video games make great source material for movies. I mean, you saw that even with [The Super Mario Bros. Movie]. It’s a different genre, but it was an amazingly successful movie,” he said.

Indeed, the animated adaptation of Nintendo’s highly-popular property proved to be a massive box office hit. Not only did it surpass the one-billion mark in earnings, it also became the third-biggest animated film of all time. Naturally, he hopes Five Nights at Freddy’s will enjoy success on both the big and small screen. “I certainly hope that’s the case [with Five Nights at Freddy’s],” added Blum, before announcing his plans to turn other popular game franchises into the next big horror movie.

“James [Wan] is actually a big gamer and we have a games division of our company that we’ve been working on. I’m definitely looking forward to finding more games that are popular and that we could turn into horror movies.”

Wan is a well-known name in the horror scene, having co-created the Saw and Insidious franchises, as well as creating The Conjuring Universe. It seems the pair has their sights set on their next project, which is none other than Behaviour Interactive and 505 Games’ Dead by Daylight.

“We couldn’t be more thrilled to work with Jason Blum and James Wan, two giants of the horror film industry, to further expand the Dead by Daylight universe,” said Behaviour’s executive vice president Stephen Mulrooney. “At Behaviour, our motto is to create unique moments, together, forever. Atomic Monster and Blumhouse are the ideal partners to craft Dead by Daylight’s killer entrance onto the big screen.”

But first, there’s Five Nights at Freddy’s for fans to get their horror fix. The movie starring Josh Hutcherson (The Hunger Games, Journey 2: The Mysterious Island) is releasing on 27 October in time for Halloween, and will be coming to both theatres and Peacock.
