First Looks — ‘Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire’ Shows Bill Murray In NYC Firehouse HQ

Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire is set to feature a team-up between two generations of heroes, as a new image shared by Empire Magazine has offered a first look at Bill Murray‘s beloved character in the upcoming film.

Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire Bill Murray

The exclusive behind-the-scenes visual shows him talking to Paul Rudd, who returns to play Gary Grooberson, first introduced in Ghostbusters: Afterlife as a fan of the original team. Murray has portrayed Dr. Peter Venkman since the original 1984 film, becoming one of the organisation’s founding members alongside Dan Aykroyd’s Ray Stantz and Harold Ramis’ Egon Spengler.

The new generation of Ghostbusters include Phoebe (Mckenna Grace, The Handmaid’s Tale), Trevor (Finn Wolfhard, Stranger Things), and Callie Spengler (Carrie Coon, Fargo). Instead of bringing back iconic villain Gozer, the sequel will feature a new big bad — the Death Chill, a fatal frost set to sink New York in the middle of summer. Looming in the background of the mist is a glowy-eyed horned figure, forcing the Ghostbusters to confront it before it threatens the city even further.

“Because the Spengler family story drove the narrative in Afterlife, bringing Gozer back to centre-stage was a natural way to close the book on the past,” shared director Gil Kenan. “But we are now in the post-Gozerian era of the Ghostbusters saga, so that means we’re able to stretch out and create an entirely new mythology. And that’s thrilling as a storyteller, because there are all-new and terrifying stakes with fresh visual references to draw on.”

The filmmaker co-wrote Afterlife with director Jason Reitman, and was part of the team responsible for introducing Egon’s family in the film. Prior to Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire, Kenan was originally attached to helm the Five Nights at Freddy’s film adaptation before Emma Tammi took over.

Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire hits theatres on 29 March 2024.
