Though details on the new season has been sparse, we do know that Bly Manor will feature entirely new characters. Though the actress who portrayed Nell Crain in Hill House, Victoria Pedretti, will be making a return to take on the roll of an American nanny to a pair of orphaned children. She is here to take over the previous nanny (Tahirah Sharif) who died tragically in Bly Manor.

A number of other familiar faces from Hill House will also be making a comeback in Bly Manor, including Henry Thomas who will be playing Henry Wingrave, uncle to the two orphaned kids, and Oliver Jackson-Cohen who is described to be portraying a character that is “a resident of Bly Manor, who makes life very difficult for everyone who lives there.”

According to Flanagan, Bly Manor will be “scarier” than Hill House. “It’s a lot more frightening, just on a visceral level.”

He added that the second season will definitely feature different beats from the first season, which focused mainly on the dynamics of the Crain family and how they dealt with childhood trauma and death.

“It was really important for all of us not to play the same notes we played for the first season,” said Flanagan. (via Independent) The first season is very much entrenched in family dynamics and death and grief and loss and child trauma. We all collectively felt like we’d said everything we wanted to say about that.”

Where Hill House was inspired by Shirley Jackson’s novel of the same name, Bly Manor takes inspiration from Henry James’ 1898 chilling tale, The Turn of the Screw.

The Haunting of Bly Manor is expected to release on Netflix this fall 2020
