Drake? Post Malone? Cardi B? Sorry folks, but Asia is still enamoured with one Ed Sheeran and the love songs he brings along.
Sure, you can say they’re corny, cliched, trite and overdone, but evidently, love songs aren’t going away yet — especially not since we have the wonderfully angelic vocals of one Ed Sheeran, who’s melting our hearts and working our tear ducts.
And this year, two of his works have made top three in Apple’s Regional Top 100 Songs, with Shape of You — the catchy pop number — coming in at number 3, and Perfect — his heartstring-tugging, soulful ballad — coming in first. For all the rampant popularity of songs about sex, drugs and violence, it looks like there’s something about love, hope and other things soft and gooey that still get to us every time.
While Ed Sheeran has also topped Apple’s Regional Top 100 Albums charts, with + (Deluxe), he’s joined by the incredibly inspiring soundtrack of The Greatest Showman — a film about accepting our differences and accepting ourselves. And that idea of persevering through the odds and coming through gloriously victorious is best encapsulated by its Golden Globe-winning title, This Is Me. Maybe it’s these worrying times of socio-economic and constitutional crises, that compel us towards more classically uplifting music choices.
And coming in third on the chart is Dua Lipa’s debut album, Dua Lipa, which has eight of its tracks released as singles out of the twelve.
