‘Dragon Quest 7’ Remake Reportedly In Development At Square Enix

There’s no denying that Square Enix’s Dragon Quest franchise has enjoyed enduring popularity over the years, and its 11 mainline titles only drive the point home. With Dragon Quest 7: Fragments of the Forgotten Past, modern audiences may soon be able to (re)visit a classic adventure, as a remake of the PS1 release is reportedly in the works.

As shared by MP1st, leaked internal documents have specifically described the project as a remake, and not a remaster, which means additional content beyond just a graphical overhaul. It will also reportedly release sometime between early 2026 and 2027, though the specifics remain under wraps.

If true, the entry is set to join a re-release of Dragon Quest 7 that was launched exclusively on the Nintendo 3DS in 2013, before a worldwide debut in 2016. As is the case with leaks, the Japanese giant hasn’t officially announced or acknowledged the project.

The original RPG was an immediate success in Japan and became the best-selling PS1 game in the country by April 2001. It follows the Hero and his friends as they discover secrets about the mysterious islands surrounding their home of Estard and defeat evil in each new location. Game mechanics remained largely the same as before, but an extensive Vocation system introduced the ability to customise the player character.

In the meantime, Dragon Quest 1+2 HD-2D Remake serves to tide fans over the wait. The forthcoming instalment comes to PC, PS5, Nintendo Switch, and Xbox Series X|S on 30 October 2025, with a confirmed release for Nintendo Switch 2 at a later date.

There’s no word on the status of Dragon Quest 12, either. Series creator Yuji Horii previously confirmed that development is ongoing, with the promise to release new information “little by little”.

“Everyone, thank you for all the congratulations,” he said then of the 38th anniversary celebrations on X/Twitter. “Dragon Quest 12‘s status has been causing a lot of worry, but actually, I just had a meeting about it. I cannot reveal the details yet, but we want to create a game that is worthy of the final contributions of the two people who passed away. I’m doing my best!”
