The Glover brothers will be replacing Justin Simien, who was previously attached to write the project. Simien reportedly left Lando to focus on directing his Haunted Mansion movie which is slated to release on 28 July.

Donald Glover Lando Calrissian Series

This won’t be Glover’s first time writing a series. Although he’s better known as musician Childish Gambino, the actor-singer-rapper previously created, wrote, executive produced and starred in FX’s comedy-drama Atlanta. His brother also executive produced.

Little is known about Lando‘s plot. It is also important to note that the deal took place before the WGA or SAG-AFTRA strikes so no work has been happening on the series since.

The character Lando first appeared in the original Star Wars film trilogy. He was played by Billy Dee Williams in 1980’s The Empire Strikes Back and 1983’s Return of the Jedi. Williams later reprised his role in 2019’s The Rise of Skywalker.

In the interim, Glover portrayed a young Lando in 2018’s Solo: A Star Wars Story. Solo was a spin-off movie set about 13 years before the events of The Empire Strikes Back. Although the movie didn’t fair as well as Lucasfilm expected, fans were taken by Glover’s interpretation of the character.

Lando was first announced in 2020 alongside other Star Wars projects, Ahsoka and The Acolyte. Ahsoka is releasing on 23 August while The Acolyte is scheduled for 2024.
