‘The Acolyte’ Will Feature The Most Jedi Than Any Other Star Wars Film Or Show

The Acolyte showrunner Leslye Headland says her upcoming High Republic-set Disney+ series will feature the most Jedi than any other Star Wars movie or tv show.

“We are looking at a time period where the Jedi are at the height of their power,” Headland told EW in a podcast. “The forces they confront are more sinister than they ever anticipated.”

The Acolyte will revolve around a former Padawan who reunites with her Jedi Master to investigate a series of crimes. It will be a mystery-thriller that will focus on “emerging dark-side powers in the final days of the High Republic era” and for the first time, be told from the perspective of the villains in Star Wars.

“These are people who are using the Force in their own way, dipping into the darker sides of the Force, and are doing it without being sanctioned by the larger institution which in this case is the Jedi,” continued Headland.

“I think Star Wars is always about some version of the underdog versus the institution, and I just thought it was very interesting to do a show about the bad guys,” she added. “It’s almost flipped. We have more Jedi than you’ve seen in any of the Star Wars content, but at the same time I think you see more morally ambiguous characters.”

The Acolyte will be lead by The Hate U Give‘s Amandla Stenberg and Squid Game‘s Lee Jung-jae. Manny Jacinto (Nine Perfect Strangers), Dafne Keen (His Dark Materials), Jodie Turner-Smith (Queen & Slim), Rebecca Henderson (Inventing Anna), Charlie Barnett (Russian Doll), Dean-Charles Chapman (1917), and Carrie-Anne Moss (The Matrix) also star.

The series is also inspired by martial arts and will not feature legacy characters. It takes place during the High Republic era of Star Wars, which ends around 100 years before The Phantom Menace.
