Taking videography to the skies isn’t the easiest task, especially where wind speed and safety are concerned. With a fair bit of practice, users should be able to get into the flow of things, and the DJI Flip seeks to facilitate this ease by offering a beginner-friendly drone experience — contrary to the hardcore impression newcomers may have of the renowned brand.
To begin with, there are three options up for grabs: a standalone device (S$519), a controller-inclusive bundle (S$739), and the more premium Fly More combo (S$929), which served as our review unit. It demands a heap of pretty pennies compared to the base drone-only pick, but includes the following for a more complete setup:
- 1x DJI RC 2 controller
- 3x batteries with charging dock
- 3x pairs of propellers
- 1x gimbal protector
- 1x shoulder bag
- 1x USB-C to USB-C cable
- 1x screwdriver
Spurring the DJI Flip into action reveals several reasons for reassurance and anticipation, starting with its lightweight design. At 249 grams, it doesn’t need to be registered for use in Singapore, with firm joints on its wings and longer legs allowing for better stability. There are also safeguarding measures in place, such as a fully-covered propeller guard, accompanying other features like various image and video resolution, format, and aspect ratio choices.
More notably, it touts DJI’s palm control technology, making it more convenient to control the drone. Supported modes include Follow, Dronie, Circle, Rocket, Spotlight, and Helix, but be careful to not set them off in densely populated areas.
