Disney Planning Two Pirates Films – A Reboot and Margot Robbie Spin-Off

It’s been seven years since the last Pirates of the Caribbean movie, and Disney has been struggling to reboot the franchise to smoother waters. A reboot has been planned, along with a Margot Robbie-led spin-off film, with Robbie last saying that she wasn’t optimistic about Disney making that film.

Producer Jerry Bruckheimer has promising news on the future of the franchise, saying that Disney was still keen on making both films. The film franchise has grossed over US$4.5 billion across its five movies and is aiming for higher sights.

“It’s two different movies,” says Bruckheimer in an interview with Entertainment Weekly, “We hope to get ’em both made, and I think Disney agrees they really want to make the Margot one, too.”

Disney Pirates of the Caribbean Reboot

Johnny Depp, who plays iconic character Captain Jack Sparrow, is currently embroiled in a legal battle and “will not be back at this point”, said Bruckheimer in 2020. The producer has since changed his mind, expressing his support for Depp’s return, saying, “It’s a reboot, but if it was up to me, he would be in it. I love him. He’s a good friend. He’s an amazing artist and he’s a unique look. He created Captain Jack.”

Jeff Nathanson (Young Woman and the Sea) is penning the script for the Pirates of the Caribbean reboot, with Bruckheimer teasing that it had “an amazing third act”, but the screenplay is under revision. It might be a while before we next see Pirates of the Caribbean on the big screen again, but perhaps the franchise will be able to get it right this time.
