Pokémon Presents gave fans a taste of Detective Pikachu Returns’ gameplay by unveiling a new trailer that dropped hints on how players will be able to go about on their journey to find Harry Goodman, Detective Pikachu’s missing partner.
A sequel to the 2016 Detective Pikachu video game, Detective Pikachu Returns picks off with Tim Goodman and Detective Pikachu still searching for Tim’s missing father. They will be joined by other members of the Goodman family such as Tim’s mother, Irene, and sister, Sophia.
With Tim talking to the humans, and Detective Pikachu talking to the Pokémons, it will be up to the player to piece everything together in their case notebook to solve the mysteries. Having a keen eye to spot clues will take players far, but don’t expect Detective Pikachu to be too serious about it.
Unlike the first game, other Pokémons will lend their hands (tails, paws, etc.) in the investigations. Growlithe, besides being an adorable mode of transport for Detective Pikachu, will use her strong sense of smell to help the players track down suspects. Darmanitan is also seen in the trailer lending his incredible strength in removing obstacles.
The 2019 Detective Pikachu film, inspired by the video game of the same name, closed off the story with the revelation that Harry’s consciousness was residing in Detective Pikachu. However, it is not known whether The Pokemon Company will continue down this storyline or branch out with a new revelation of where Tim’s father has disappeared to and why Tim is able to converse with Detective Pikachu.
Detective Pikachu Returns’ Nintendo Switch launch is set for 6 October 2023.
