Marvel Studios has exciting news for Daredevil fans. At San Diego Comic-Con 2022, the studio confirmed that Charlie Cox will return as Matt Murdock in a new series, Daredevil: Born Again. Initially intended as a reboot, creative changes have now positioned the series as a continuation of Netflix’s acclaimed Daredevil.
Marvel Studios Head of Streaming, Brad Winderbaum, shared insights on the Official Marvel Podcast, drawing parallels between Daredevil: Born Again and the animated hit X-Men ’97.
“Daredevil is incredible. It’s similar in some ways to X-Men ’97 because it’s reviving something that the fans love. But it’s taking it in a new direction,” Winderbaum explained. “These characters have matured. The universe is different than it was. Things have changed. Society’s changed.”
He highlighted that the evolving dynamics in society and between characters like Matt Murdock and Wilson Fisk will introduce a fresh narrative complexity. “Matt and Wilson have changed, and their characters are gonna collide in ways we’ve never seen before. It’s no longer enough to try and murder each other, there’s a whole game of politics at play.”
Set to premiere on Disney+ in March 2025, Daredevil: Born Again will mostly adapt the Devil’s Reign crossover arc, rather than strictly following its namesake comic storyline. Leaked set photos suggest intense conflicts involving Daredevil, The Punisher, and a villainous Kingpin, now portrayed as mayor.
Charlie Cox’s portrayal of Daredevil first captivated audiences in 2015 on Netflix, establishing the series as a cornerstone of superhero television. The success of Daredevil spurred the creation of additional Marvel series on Netflix, including Jessica Jones, Luke Cage, Iron Fist, The Punisher, and The Defenders miniseries.
However, after three successful seasons, Netflix cancelled Daredevil in 2018, leading to the reversion of character rights back to Marvel Studios. This transition paved the way for Daredevil: Born Again, providing an opportunity for these matured characters to explore new depths in a changed universe.
