CD Projekt Red Renews Hope For More ‘Cyberpunk 2077’ Animation Projects

Before CD Projekt Red‘s sprawling RPG Cyberpunk 2077 went down in history as one of the best video games, Cyberpunk: Edgerunners already made a big name for itself. The animated series helmed by Studio Trigger (Delicious in Dungeon, Promare) defied expectations to give fans everything they wanted in an adaptation of the game, including a gripping, emotionally-charged story.

Despite its highly popular and successful run, a second season was never materialised, leaving many hungry for more narrative exploration. Good news, then — joint CEO Michał Nowakowski confirmed in the company’s latest earnings call that more animation projects set in the Cyberpunk 2077 universe are in the works (via IGN), though no specifics were mentioned.

“We are definitely planning to do more in terms of animation with Cyberpunk so I hope that’s enough as an answer,” he said. “So expect to see more for sure, but that’s as far as I can go right now.”

Considering that the Netflix series was intended as a standalone work, it’s unlikely for Cyberpunk: Edgerunners to return for a second outing, which is perhaps for the best. It premiered in September 2022 to high praise from critics and fans alike, successfully driving the daily player count of Cyberpunk 2077 past one million at one point.

The base game also added a special tribute to a character from the animated spin-off, with the latter winning Crunchyroll’s Anime of the Year award. Additionally, a live-action project is set to bring Night City to life sometime in the near future, though details like a release date or airing format remain scarce. Anonymous Content, the company behind shows like True Detective and Mr. Robot, as well as Academy-winning movies such as The Revenant and Spotlight, will produce.
