Barbie’s latest achievement comes just days after it passed Universal’s The Super Mario Bros Movie as the highest-grossing film of 2023 at the domestic box office. It previously overtook The Dark Knight as Warner Bros. highest-grossing domestic release too. At this rate, it is expected to pass The Super Mario Bros global gross of US$1.36 billion to become the top worldwide earner of the year.

Starring Margot Robbie as the titular doll, Barbie led the domestic office every week following its release on 21 July up until Blue Beetle hit theatres on 18 August. It also cemented director Gerwig as the first female director to hit US$1 billion at the box office.

Barbie doesn’t just hold records in the world of film. Ryan Gosling’s song I’m Just Ken entered the Billboard Hot 100 at No.87 this month.

Given Barbie‘s success, it is no surprise that toy company Mattel is keen on making not just a sequel, but a potential Barbie Cinematic Universe too.

In Barbie, Barbie and Ken leave their seemingly perfect world of Barbie Land to experience the real world. The two dolls soon discover the joys and perils of living among humans. You can read our review here.
