Ubisoft’s latest action role-playing game Assassin’s Creed Shadows might have already broken records when it was released on 20 March, but its momentum shows no sign of slowing down, as it has just reached another major milestone by exceeding two million players after its launch weekend, putting it on track to be the series’ most successful game yet.

Having passed the one million player mark on the day of its release, it should come as no surprise that this number would only increase over its launch weekend when more potential players would have time to get started. Still, it’s an impressive feat indeed, and according to a celebratory post on Ubisoft’s social media channels, the game’s launch has also surpassed that of its predecessors, namely 2017’s Assassin’s Creed Origins and its 2018 sequel, Assassin’s Creed Odyssey.
It’s worth noting that Ubisoft has not announced the actual sales figures for the game, but its success can still be inferred based on available data on Steam. At the time of writing, the game currently sits at an all-time peak of 64,825 concurrent players, and it’s now ranked third on the platform’s global top-selling chart, surpassing that of other recent hits like Split Fiction and Monster Hunter Wilds.

True to Ubisoft’s claims, Assassin’s Creed Shadows has also now become the most-played game in the franchise on Steam. Its current all-time peak player count has surpassed that of both Assassin’s Creed Odyssey and Assassin’s Creed Origins, which sits at 62,069 and 41,551 peak concurrent players respectively. Of course, it’s true concurrent peak player count should no doubt be much higher considering that its launch across PS5, Xbox Series X|S and other PC platforms like Ubisoft Connect, with even a simultaneous launch on Mac devices to further boost actual sales.
Performance-wise, the game isn’t a slouch either, garnering positive scores from critics on sites like Metacritic, where its average review score hovers around 80% across all platforms. Its user score on the platform fairs much worse, however, with an average score of 59%. With its success, Assassin’s Creed Shadows is a huge win for Ubisoft, especially considering the tough time it has had of late, and will hopefully be a learning lesson for the franchise’s future instalments.
