AMD Challenges NVIDIA RTX 40 With Radeon RX 7700 XT And RX 7800 XT 1440P Gaming GPUs

1440p gaming displays are all the hype nowadays, so it only makes sense for AMD to set its sights on the growing market. The company’s new graphics cards will raise the standard for 1440p gaming with a tailored set of features, laying down the gauntlet to NVIDIA’s RTX 40 series of GPUs.

Offering more bandwidth for high-resolution gaming, the AMD Radeon RX 7700 XT boasts 12GB of memory, a 192-bit bus, and a 432 GB/s bandwidth. The higher-end RX 7800 XT, meanwhile, promises 16GB of memory, a 256-bit bus, and a bandwidth of 624 GB/s, with both clocking average frame rates of above 60 FPS at 1440p resolution.

AMD’s benchmark numbers give an idea of what to expect. In The Last of Us Part 1, the RX 7700XT recorded an average of 62 FPS, whereas its sibling saw a 76 FPS average at max settings. Likewise, Star Wars Jedi: Survivor presented an average frame rate of 63 FPS and 77 FPS respectively.

When pitted against the RTX 4070 in Cyberpunk 2077 and Red Dead Redemption 2, the RX 7800 XT yielded a 23 percent and 10 percent increase in FPS performance, while the RX 7700 XT (vs RTX 4060 Ti) clocked a 26 percent and 19 percent improvement. The AMD Fidelity Super Resolution 3 (FSR 3) technology further elevates the experience, bringing resolution upscaling, fluid motion frames, and reduced lag to supported titles.

The full list is as follows:

  • Immortals of Avenum
  • Forspoken
  • Avatar: Frontier of Pandora
  • Cyberpunk 2077
  • Warhammer 40K: Space Marine II
  • Frostpunk 2
  • The Alters
  • Squad
  • Starship Troopers: Extermination
  • Black Myth: Wukong
  • Crimson Desert
  • Like A Dragon: Infinite Wealth

Elsewhere, the AMD HYPR-RX looks to combine Radeon Super Resolution, Radeon Boost and Radeon Anti-Lag for reduced system latency, dynamic resolution scaling, and spatial upscaling. Other features include AI acceleration, 12 GB / 16GB VRAM, and support for various smart technologies.

The ultimate icing on the cake, though, is the complimentary copy of Starfield that customers will receive when they purchase an AMD Radeon RX 7700 XT (starting at US$449) or RX 7800 XT (starting at US$499) graphics card. Both GPUs are releasing on 6 September 2023, the same day that Bethesda’s sci-fi RPG releases.
