Universal Pictures and Legendary Entertainment’s live-action film adaptation, A Minecraft Movie, has certainly built a name for itself as one of the top-grossing video game movies in recent memory, so it shouldn’t come as a surprise that a sequel is already being discussed.
Debuting to a whopping US$301 million globally over its opening weekend, the movie’s success seemed to have been predicted by its director, Jared Hess, who revealed during an interview with Deadline that “there’s already talk” about a potential sequel and that its narrative has already been planned out.

When asked about his desire to return for a sequel, Hess stated his enthusiasm for the film and that “there were so many things that [they] didn’t tap into that [they] wanted to”, hinting at his desire to build upon the expansive world of the video game. “I would have a blast doing the sequel, and it seems like there’s already talk about it happening, so I’m super excited. It’ll be so much fun to go back into the world,” he teased.
In terms of what the follow-up movie would entail, Hess explained that this was already “teased in the end credits”, which (Spoiler Alert!) saw Jack Black’s Steve return to the real world to help Jason Momoa’s Garrett create a new video game. Upon returning to his old house to retrieve his belongings, it is revealed that the house’s new owner was none other than Alex, who was the game’s second playable character to be introduced after Steve.
According to Hess, the potential sequel will focus on the relationship between Alex, “the other massively critical character in Minecraft“, and Steve, which makes a lot of sense considering the two are often seen adventuring together in the games. One thing’s for sure, though: the possibilities to expand upon the game’s massive sandbox of interesting locales and stories are endless, so the movie’s follow-up is sure to bring more Overworld shenanigans, easter eggs, and hopefully, more Chicken Jockey.
