HBO has released the first trailer for its upcoming Game of Thrones prequel, A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, offering a look at Dunk and Egg’s adventures ahead of its release in January 2026.
Spanning six half-hour episodes, A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms will centre on Ser Duncan the Tall (Peter Claffey, Vikings: Valhalla), a hedge knight in Westeros, as he wanders the land and teams up with a squire named Egg (Dexter Sol Ansell, The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes). The show is based on George R. R. Martin’s Tales of Dunk and Egg novels, and will be set between the events of 2022’s House of the Dragon and 2011’s Game of Thrones.
The show sees the return of the production team from House of the Dragon, including writer and executive producers Martin and Ira Parker, alongside Ryan Condal. Owen Harris (Kill Your Friends) will direct the show’s first three episodes, with Sarah Adina Smith (Birds of Paradise) taking over for the season’s latter half.

A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms will premiere on HBO on 18 January 2026. As reported by Variety, the series’ official logline reads: “A century before the events of Game of Thrones, two unlikely heroes wandered Westeros, a young, naïve but courageous knight, Ser Duncan the Tall, and his diminutive squire, Egg. Set in an age when the Targaryen line still holds the Iron Throne, and the memory of the last dragon has not yet passed from living memory, great destinies, powerful foes, and dangerous exploits all await these improbable and incomparable friends.”
