‘Street Fighter’ Claims Box Office Crown With US$51M Opening Weekend

Paramount’s Street Fighter film adaptation has beaten its way to the top of the weekend box office, securing the number one spot with a worldwide gross of US$51.1 million.

As reported by Deadline, the film garnered US$31 million domestically and US$20.1 million internationally in its theatrical debut, allowing it to sit comfortably at the top spot despite lacklustre reviews. The film is currently sitting at a 42 percent critic rating on sites like Rotten Tomatoes, although its audience score fares much better at 79 percent.

Directed by Kitao Sakurai, the film features an ensemble cast of characters from Capcom’s Street Fighter franchise, including Andrew Koji as Ryu, Noah Centineo as Ken, Callina Liang as Chun-Li, David Dastmalchian as M. Bison, Joe “Roman Reigns” Anoa’i as Akuma, Cody Rhodes as Guile, Curtis “50 Cent” Jackson as Balrog, Jason Momoa as Blanka, and more, centring on Chun-Li recruiting the estranged fighters Ryu and Ken for a tournament held by the dictator M. Bison.

Despite winning the weekend box office, Street Fighter still wasn’t able to beat its video game adaptation rival, Warner Bros Mortal Kombat II, which debuted earlier in the year with a US$63 million global opening. Score-wise, the latter fared much better, so Street Fighter will have to also contend with its poor reviews in the coming weeks, meaning drawing in more viewers might be more of an uphill battle.

At least Capcom can still count on its other video game movie adaptation, Zach Cregger’s Resident Evil, which garnered an additional US$22.1 million over its fifth weekend for a third place finish. With a worldwide total of US$361 million, it’s also the third-best horror movie of 2026 behind Obsession (US$523 million) and Backrooms (US$401 million).

Rounding off the top five box office earners this weekend was Indian action title Jailer 2, which came in second with a US$32 million global opening, alongside Blumhouse Atomic Monster’s Other Mommy (US$17.9 million) and Amazon MGM Studios’ Verity (US$17.6 million) at fourth and fifth place, respectively.
