WhatsApp Adds Usernames To Limit Number Sharing, Reservations Now Open

WhatsApp is introducing a new usernames feature to improve privacy while also enabling users to easily contact others without the need to exchange numbers, with users now able to reserve their usernames ahead of its launch later in the year.

Announced via an official WhatsApp blog post, the main reasoning behind the introduction of this feature lies in privacy, as sometimes, users would like to contact others or join messaging groups without having to share their personal numbers. To this end, the new usernames feature will ensure privacy as there will be no way to browse for usernames via a directory once it’s launched, meaning users will have to know another person’s exact username to contact them.

Once the feature is launched, WhatsApp users can choose to enable it, and once they do so, others will no longer be able to see their phone number when messaging for the first time. Additionally, there will also be an optional username key feature, which others will need to know before messaging the recipient.

With the imminent launch of usernames, WhatsApp is steadily taking more cues from Telegram, although with an added layer of security, as the latter does provide the option to browse for such usernames. The feature will no doubt come in handy when dealing with pesky scammers.

As billions of people are using the messenger, names are sure to overlap, and that’s why WhatsApp has opened early reservations for users to select their unique usernames ahead of launch. To do so, users need to update to the latest version of the app and head to Settings > Account > Username, then create a username to see if it is currently available. The app also provides an option to generate a username, alongside the ability to claim an existing Instagram or Facebook username for those who wish to keep their account names consistent.

Reservations for WhatsApp usernames are now open, with the feature being rolled out gradually over the coming months.
