Who ya gonna call? A new team of Ghostbusters! It’s been a while since Netflix called on an animated series for the beloved franchise, and the streamer has finally dropped some updates at the Annecy International Animation Film Festival, including a release date and story details.

Titled Ghostbusters: Night Shift, it picks up after the events of Ghostbusters II and introduces a new generation of ghost hunters embroiled in a dangerous tangle of supernatural activity. The show comes from Netflix and Sony Pictures Animation, with Jason Reitman, son of original director Ivan Reitman, Gil Kenan, co-writer of 2021’s Ghostbusters: Afterlife and Frozen Empire (2024), and Dan Aykroyd, who starred in and wrote the first two films, returning as executive producers. Also executive producing are Ben Hibon, Elliott Kalan, and Amie Karp.
The official logline reads, “New York City, 1994 — Five years after the Ghostbusters took the Statue of Liberty for a walk, a new wave of supernatural terror hits the Big Apple, forcing a group of scrappy, young New Yorkers — untrained, underappreciated, and kinda sorta responsible for the problem — to put on proton packs, face their fears, and bust some ghosts.”
Alongside the synopsis, two first-look images were unveiled, featuring more gritty stylings to go with the signature humour and paranormal actions fans have come to love:

Ghostbusters: Night Shift clocks in on Netflix in 2027. It’s one of two upcoming ghost-busting adventures set to expand the larger universe, with the other being an animated film to be directed by Kris Pearn (Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs 2). No release date has been set for that, however, and plot and casting details remain under wraps.
