‘Mass Effect’ TV Series Has New Story Set After The Original Game Trilogy

Amazon’s upcoming Mass Effect television adaptation will not retell Commander Shepard’s storyline from the original video game trilogy. Instead, it will introduce an entirely new narrative set after the events of the original series, BioWare confirmed during its annual N7 Day.

In his blog post, Mass Effect franchise lead Mike Gamble shared that “The show will explore a brand-new story within the universe’s timeline, and will be set after the original trilogy. It won’t be a retread of Commander Shepard’s story,” adding that Shepard’s arc remains intentionally defined by player choice.

This circumvents the long-standing challenge of adapting Mass Effect’s branching narrative, in which key decisions, from character relationships to the fate of entire species, lies solely in the hands of players. The franchise has also never established a single canon version of its ending, a factor that has influenced previous expansions of the series (Mass Effect: Andromeda, which took place in an entirely separate galaxy).

Earlier listings suggested that filming may begin in late 2026, though no official schedule has been announced. Initial placeholder descriptions had led to speculation that the adaptation might revisit the first game’s storyline, but BioWare’s clarification indicates a direction more in line with the Fallout series — an original plot set within an established lore.

The Mass Effect series is currently being developed with Fast & Furious 9 screenwriter Daniel Casey attached as writer, and Doug Jung (Star Trek Beyond, Mindhunter) serving as showrunner. Executive producers include Mike Gamble, former Marvel Studios producer Ari Arad, and Karim Zreik, previously an executive producer on Jessica Jones.
