PlayStation 6 To Stick With AMD For Backwards Compatibility

Despite recently revealing the launch of the PlayStation 5 Pro, Sony already seems to be hard at work on their next-generation console, the PlayStation 6

According to Reuters, Sony has contracted AMD to design and manufacture chips for its new console, beating rival Intel in the bidding process. The reason, per sources provided in the article, is that “Moving from AMD, which made the PS5 chip, to Intel would have risked backwards compatibility, which was a subject of discussion between Intel and Sony engineers and executives.” Choosing Intel to produce the chips would have also proven “costly and taken engineering resources”.

With this information, the tech giant has likely set their sights on prioritising backwards compatibility for the PlayStation 6, as it’s described to be a “feature Sony often includes in a next-generation system” — the probable decision-making factor that led to sticking with AMD. A disagreement on the price might also have been a large part of Sony’s eventual decision.
