‘Game of Thrones’ Spin-Off ‘A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms’ Begins Filming

The Game of Thrones universe is expanding with the new spinoff series, A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms. Filming is now underway in Belfast, Ireland.

Based on George R.R. Martin’s novella The Hedge Knight, the series is set a century before the events of Game of Thrones and precisely one hundred years after House of the Dragon. This new addition to the franchise will explore the tales of Ser Duncan the Tall and his young squire, Egg.

The series stars Peter Claffey as Ser Duncan the Tall, a towering knight with a heart of gold, and Dexter Sol Ansell as Egg, a squire who hides his royal heritage under a pseudonym. The official synopsis reads:

A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms

“A century before the events of Game of Thrones, two unlikely heroes wandered Westeros … a young, naïve but courageous knight, Ser Duncan the Tall, and his diminutive squire, Egg (Dexter Sol Ansell). Set in an age when the Targaryen line still holds the Iron Throne, and the memory of the last dragon has not yet passed from living memory, great destinies, powerful foes, and dangerous exploits all await these improbable and incomparable friends.”

Joining Claffey and Ansell is a stellar new cast including Finn Bennett (True Detective: Night Country) as Prince Aerion Targaryen, Bertie Carvel (The Crown) as Prince Baelor Targaryen, and Sam Spruell (Fargo) as Prince Maekar Targaryen. Daniel Ings (Sex Education) will portray the boisterous Ser Lyonel Baratheon, known affectionately as the Laughing Storm, while Tanzyn Crawford (Tiny Beautiful Things) steps into the role of Tanselle, a puppeteer who crosses paths with the wandering duo.

The first season will consist of six episodes directed by Sarah Adina Smith, known for her work on Lessons In Chemistry and Hanna, and Owen Harris (Black Mirror), who will also executive produce. The show is set to delve deep into the lore of Westeros during a time when the Targaryen dynasty ruled unchallenged, and the memory of dragons lingered in the minds of all.
