‘Game of Thrones’ Prequel ‘Knight of the Seven Kingdoms’ Lands ‘Black Mirror’ Director

HBO is set to expand the Game of Thrones universe with a new spin-off, A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, bringing on board Owen Harris, the acclaimed director known for his work on Black Mirror, including the episode San Junipero, to work on the first half of the season. The series, previously referred to as A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms: The Hedge Knight, will debut with a shortened season of six episodes, a change from the initially planned ten.

Knight of the Seven Kingdoms

A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms is set a century before the events of Game of Thrones, during a time when the Targaryen dynasty still reigns and the memory of the last dragon lingers. The series will follow the adventures of Ser Duncan the Tall (Dunk), a young, naive but brave knight, and his squire, Egg, who is destined to become King Aegon V Targaryen. The story is based on George R.R. Martin’s Tales of Dunk and Egg novellas.

Per Deadline, the first three episodes of the series will be directed by Harris, who is also an executive producer on the project. Harris’s directing credits include other Black Mirror episodes like Be Right Back and Striking Vipers, showcasing his ability to handle complex narratives and deep character exploration. His involvement is expected to bring a unique cinematic quality to the series.

As the first season’s release is anticipated, details about who will direct the latter half remain undisclosed. Harris, besides his work on Black Mirror, has directed episodes for Troy: Fall of a City and the revival of The Twilight Zone. His feature film debut, Kill Your Friends, premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival.

A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms is set to premiere sometime in 2025, continuing the exploration of the fantastical world that has captivated audiences worldwide. For now, fans are anticipating the second season of another Game of Thrones spin-off, House of the Dragon, which is set to premiere on 17 June.
