2.5 Million Copies In A Day: Marvel’s ‘Spider-Man 2’ Is Fastest Selling PlayStation Studios Game

The official PlayStation Twitter account has revealed that Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 swung its way into the hearts of fans by selling more than 2.5 million copies within its first 24 hours. The exciting news was shared with a celebratory tweet, expressing gratitude to fans for its high-flying launch.

What’s noteworthy is that the 2.5 million copies mentioned are “sold through,” not just shipped. Game publishers often tout the number of copies shipped to retailers, which doesn’t necessarily equate to actual sales, as not all copies are immediately purchased.

However, the “sold through” figure refers to copies bought either through retailers or digitally via the PlayStation Store. This provides a more accurate reflection of how many gamers have already acquired the game, and enjoy its engaging gameplay and cinematic storytelling.

To put this achievement in context, the last time Sony declared a game as its “fastest-selling” at launch was with God of War: Ragnarök, which impressively sold through 5.1 million copies during its debut week (although figures for the first 24 hours weren’t disclosed).

Before that, in June 2020, The Last of Us Part 2 made waves by selling through more than 4 million copies in its first three days. Preceding that, it was Insomniac’s initial Spider-Man game, which swung onto the scene with 3.3 million copies sold in its first three days.

Marvel’s Spider-Man 2‘s remarkable success has certainly cemented its place in the superhero gaming hall of fame.
