Zack Snyder Responds To ‘Rebel Moon’ Hate, Says Director’s Cuts Are ‘Insane’

Zack Snyder’s ambitious Netflix saga, Rebel Moon, has sparked polarising views, particularly its first instalment, Rebel Moon: Part 1 – A Child of Fire.

Despite the mixed reactions and a 21% critics score on Rotten Tomatoes, Snyder stands by his work. Known for his distinctive filmmaking style, Snyder acknowledges the divisive reception of his films but remains unphased by the critique. In an Empire magazine interview, he reflected on the polarising nature of his movies and expressed curiosity about the reception of the upcoming R-rated director’s cuts.

“I don’t really have a rebuttal to the reviews. For whatever reason, the reaction to my movies is very polarising, and it always has been. The movie, it doesn’t seem like there’s that much in it that would warrant such visceral responses.”

Rebel Moon, envisioned as a new sci-fi franchise that was supposedly poised to rival Star Wars and Star Trek, faced criticism for lacking originality, contradicting Snyder’s promises of a unique and groundbreaking series. Snyder, undeterred, highlights the planned director’s cuts for both parts of Rebel Moon, promising a version filled with additional violence, nudity, and “insane” content. These R-rated cuts aim to showcase the film’s intended vision, potentially altering its reception among critics and fans.

“They’re insane. It’ll be interesting to see what the [critics] say about the director’s cuts. That’s a different kettle of fish.”

As Rebel Moon: Part Two – The Scargiver approaches its Netflix release in April 2024, anticipation builds for these director’s cuts, set to drop in the summer. Despite the challenges faced by the sequel, given the first film’s reception, Snyder’s enthusiasm for his project remains high.

Rebel Moon continues to narrate the epic tale of Kora (Sofia Boutella) and her allies as they prepare for a monumental battle to protect their newfound homeland against the oppressive forces of the Motherworld.

Rebel Moon: Part Two – The Scargiver will stream on Netflix on 19 April 2024.
