There’s a new mystery in town, and it involves an entire class of missing elementary school children. Zach Cregger, the up-and-rising genre filmmaker behind horror hit Barbarian, has debuted the trailer for his upcoming fright fest Weapons, starring Julia Garner (Ozark, The Perks of Being a Wallflower) and Josh Brolin (Avengers: Endgame, No Country for Old Men).
“This is a true story that happened in my town,” opens the trailer with a voiceover narration. “So this one Wednesday is like a normal day for the whole school, but today was different. Every other class had all their kids, but Mrs. Gandy’s room was totally empty.”
The little girl’s voice continues, “And do you know why? Because the night before, at 2:17 in the morning, every kid woke up, got out of bed, walked downstairs and into the dark. And they never came back.”

Mrs. Gandy, played by Garner, is naturally pinned as a suspect of some kind, as the vanishing act only affects her students, and no others. The actor is joined by Brolin, who plays the father of one of the missing children, alongside Benedict Wong (Solo: A Star Wars Story, Cocaine Bear), Doctor Strange, 3 Body Problem), Austin Abrams (Euphoria, Paper Towns), Alden Ehrenreich (, Amy Madigan (Twice in a Lifetime, Roe vs. Wade), Cary Christopher, and June Diane Raphael (Year One, Ass Backwards).
Roy Lee and Miri Yun are producing the horror pic via Vertigo, with Cregger also penning the script. The director scored a surprise hit in 2022’s Barbarian, which earned the top spot at the box office in its opening weekend, and has been tapped to helm Sony’s upcoming Resident Evil movie reboot, slated for release on 18 September 2026.
“He gave me a crash course on how to handle the inevitable challenges, and that was so valuable,” shared Cregger, on receiving guidance from his friend and Get Out director Jordan Peele for the film.
Weapons will hit theatres on 8 August.
