Willow Sequel Set For Disney+

Those who are still on the fence about subscribing to yet another streaming service will soon get a big reason to go do so.

According to Variety, Ron Howard and co-writer of Solo Jonathan Kasan are in serious negotiations for a sequel to Howard’s 1988 high fantasy film Willow on Disney+.

This confirmation comes after years of Howard entertaining rumours of a sequel with vague mentions of discussions between Disney and Lucasfilm.

In an interview on MTV’s Happy Sad Confused podcast, Howard confirmed that he is in the midst of a serious discussion with Kasdan to bring Willow to Disney’s streaming service,

“There are some really serious discussions going on with Jon Kasdan, who was one of the writers of Solo, who kept hounding me about Willow the whole time we were shooting and also hounding Kathy Kennedy. We’re in discussions about developing a Willow television show for the Disney+. And I think it’d be a great way to go. In fact, George always talked about the possibility of a Willow series, and it’d be great and more intimate, and built around that character and some of the others. And Jon Kasdan has, I think, an inspired take on it and it could be really, really cool.”

Willow is set in a fantasy world and sees Willow Ufgood (Warwick Davis) embarking on a quest to protect an infant prophesized to bring about the demise of the evil sorceress Queen Bacmorda. Accompanying him on the journey is mercenary Madmartigan (Val Kilmer) and warrior Sorsha (Joanna Whalley).

Howard has also hinted that Davis might be returning as the titular character, and that the series might explore a “more mature Willow”.

“Warwick will be in it. Warwick is so cool and so good and he’s such a  good actor that I really hope we get the chance to see the mature Willow in action,” Howard said

It is still unknown if Whalley or Kilmer will be returning to reprise their characters but Marvel Studios’ Captain America Chris Evans seem to have an idea on a possible Madmartigan.

Disney+ is set to launch on November 12, 2019.
