Willem Dafoe Takes On Ghostly Role In ‘Beetlejuice 2’

Beetlejuice, Beetlejuice, Willem Dafoe (The Lighthouse, Inside). The Spider-Man actor has revealed the ghostly part he will be playing in the much-anticipated sequel to Tim Burton’s (Corpse Bride, Batman) Beetlejuice. He joins a star-studded cast alongside the likes of Michael Keaton (The Flash, Beetlejuice), Winona Ryder (Haunted Mansion, Heathers), and Jenna Ortega (Wednesday, Scream).

Dafoe confirmed his role in the sequel to Variety, a supernatural officer of the law who was once an action movie star – now able to put his skills to good use in patrolling the afterlife.

“I haven’t seen any footage yet, but it was fun to do. I play a police officer in the afterlife, so I’m a dead person. And in life I was a B-movie action star, but I had an accident and that’s what sent me to the other side. But because of my skills, I became a detective character in the afterlife. So that’s my job. But it’s coloured by the fact of who I was [when I was alive]: a B movie action star.”

Beetlejuice 2, which was delayed by the SAG-AFTRA and WGA strikes, also sees newcomers Monica Bellucci (Memory, Tears of the Sun) and Justin Theroux (American Psycho, Megamind) joining the cast.

The details of the sequel are not set in stone, but it is confirmed to be a direct sequel to the original film, a ghostly comedy where the afterlife gets a mischievous twist when a deceased couple hires an eccentric “bio-exorcist” to haunt their former home’s new inhabitants.

Beetlejuice 2 is set to hit theatres on 6 September 2024.
