‘Wicked’ First-Look Reveals Cynthia Erivo & Ariana Grande as Elphaba & Glinda

Wicked director Jon M. Chu has shared the first look at his upcoming adaptation of the classic Broadway musical starring Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande.

The director shared two images on his Twitter page, revealing Erivo and Grande in their respective roles as Elphaba and Glinda.

The first photo shared is of Erivo as Elphaba standing in what seemed like an attic of an abandoned tower. Based on the musical, this still could be from Wicked’s iconic ‘Defying Gravity’ musical performance where Elphaba is fleeing and taking up her title as the ‘wicked witch’.

The second photo reveals Grande’s Glinda climbing up a dark stairwell. This could likely be taken from the scene where Glinda attempts to convince her best friend to apologize to the wizard and Madame Morrible.

Both photos showed were relatively dark, with netizens comparing them to the dark style of Game of Thrones and Ted Burton. In the first photo, Erivo’s face could hardly be seen, but it was clear that the actress was covered in full-green makeup and is holding her broomstick. As for the first look of Grande, her bright pink gown and blonde locks stood out against the backdrop of a dark and eerie stairwell.

Chu responded to comments critiquing his choice of lighting with the promise of more stills to come and that “colour is in my DNA.”

Wicked is based on the musical of the same name. It is the prequel to The Wizard of Oz and tells the story of how Elphaba turned into the Wicked Witch of the West and how Glinda became the Good Witch. It also stars Oscar-winning Michelle Yeoh as Madame Morrible, Jeff Goldblum as Wizard, Jonathan Bailey as Fiyero and Ethan Slater as Boq.

Chu’s Wicked movie will come in two parts, with the first set to be released on 25 December 2024, and the second coming the following Christmas.
