What Is The Darksaber And Its Significance In Live-Action Star Wars TV

If you’ve watched the season finale of The Mandalorian, you’re probably shook to the core right now. This piece contains spoilers of the finale so come back here when you’re done watching it. Otherwise, proceed.

The season finale was intense, to say the least, and has one of the best shootout scenes we’ve seen in Star Wars. We finally learn that the Mando’s name is Din Djarin and we even see his face! Baby Yoda is a Jedi and we get to see the first-ever live-action and on-screen Darksaber.

Shut. The. Front. Door.

What Is A Darksaber?

Revealed in the last scene of the episode, Moff Gideon carved his way out of a TIE fighter using the Darksaber. The black-bladed lightsaber may look like any other lightsaber to casual fans, but true Star Wars fans know that the Darksaber is no ordinary lightsaber. It is an incredibly unique weapon in Star Wars lore. It even has an entire expanded universe novel written about it.

Origins Of The Darksaber

darksaber

According to legends, the Darksaber was created during the rule of the Old Republic by Tarre Vizsla. Vizsla was the first-ever Mandalorian to join the Jedi Order. With him joining the Jedi Order, it brought brief peace between the two warring factions – the Mandalorians and the Jedis. But when Vizsla was appointed the ruler of Mandalore, he took the weapon with him back to this home planet to rule. Upon his death, The Jedi Order collected the Darksaber and sealed it in the Jedi Temple.

Its Significance

The Darksaber is one of the Mandalorian culture’s most prized weapons and artefacts. So when the Old Republic fell, Mandalorians of Clan Vizsla raided the temple and took back what was once theirs. The weapon grew to be an important and powerful symbol of Mandalorian authority and was used to unite the Mandalorian clans through its long history of civil wars. The person who wields the Darksaber is appointed the leader of Clan Vizsla and the only way a person could become the master of the unique weapon was to defeat its previous owner in combat – truly Mandalorian style.

Who Held It Last?

After the heist, the Darksaber was held by Pre Vizsla in Rebels. His clan later saved Darth Maul. It was definitely not a wise thing to do because Maul later desired the Darksaber for himself and challenged Pre Vizsla to a duel. Maul won and ruled over Mandalore. This did not sit well with the Mandalorians. They were divided as to whether to follow Darth Maul, a non-Mandalore or a Mandalore leader. Civil War soon broke out on the planet.

Fast forward and Maul later used the Darksaber in a battle with Darth Sidious. He loses, and the Darksaber was thrown away like a piece of junk. The Empire soon established itself and reigned over the galaxy. It is here where fans become familiar and accustomed to Maul and his red double-ended lightsaber.

The Darksaber was later found in a collection of Maul’s artefacts on Dathomir. A Mandalorian weapon expert named Sabine Wren later stole the weapon and gave it to Bo-Katan Kyrze. Bo-Katan Kryze later used it to secure her place as the true and rightful leader of Mandalore, once again uniting all Mandalorians. She is the last known person to wield the black lightsaber.

Until now.

Moff Gideon and the Darksaber

Moff Gideon holding the Darksaber at the end of The Mandalorian means one thing and one thing only – it did not end well for Bo-Katan Kyrze and Mandalore. This was further supported when the show refers to a “purge” by the Empire that led many Mandalorians into hiding. If the Empire managed to take control of its Beskar Steel, it is quite possible that they retrieved the weapon too.

What will Gideon do? And will we see more uses of the Darksaber too? Guess we’ll just have to wait for Season 2

All we have to say is, we’ve got a bad feeling about this.
