The Walking Dead Creator Finally Reveals Origin Of The Zombie Virus And It’s Not What You’d Expect

It has been a decade since AMC’s The Walking Dead debuted on television and viewers still have no clue how the zombie apocalypse started. Now, after all this time, writer and co-creator of the original comic books, Robert Kirkman, has finally revealed what started the apocalypse and it is… extraterrestrial spores apparently.

While responding to a fan question on Twitter asking how the show’s zombies came to be, Kirkman replied “space spore”. Though it remains to be seen if he is kidding or actually serious about his answer but considering his past denials in an explanation for the series’ zombies ever coming, it is more likely that this is a joke.

However, his answer would corroborate a previous statement he gave in 2018 where he stated the zombie apocalypse and the resulting chaos that ensued was due to a “crazy sci-fi thing that would make the story all that much weirder.”

In the exact same 2018 interview, Kirkman said that the cause of the zombie apocalypse matters little, especially with regards to the show’s characters as they likely will not buy or be bothered with any explanation.

“Honestly if a scientist from Washington came to the character and told them what happened the characters would just shrug and say ‘Oh… okay,'” Kirkman adds. “It wouldn’t change their lives at all.”

Of course, it also stands to reason that Kirkman’s story does not need an explanation for how to zombie outbreak happened, as the main crux of The Walking Dead was on the characters navigating through a zombie apocalypse. Hence, if anyone really needs an answer for how the outbreak started, ‘space spore’ is as good an answer as anything else.
