The storyline revolves around Ken Sato, a renowned baseball star who finds himself inheriting the role of the Earth-defending hero Ultraman. However, the plot takes an intriguing turn as Ken must navigate the complexities of fatherhood, tasked with raising the offspring of his greatest adversary. To add to the drama, he’ll have to contend with the Kaiju Defense Force, an organisation with its own agenda that complicates his mission.

Emmy-winning director Shannon Tindle, known for works like Lost Ollie and Kubo and the Two Strings, expressed his excitement about the project, describing it as a dream come true. Tindle’s unique approach to the franchise promises a fresh perspective.

Tsuburaya Productions (the studio behind the Ultra series) CEO Takayuki Tsukagoshi endorsed this vision, stating, “This partnership with Netflix will be the first full-scale endeavor to reach the global market for Tsuburaya Productions. Ultraman, since it was created, has charmed many people around the world. And Shannon Tindle is one of those people. He was greatly influenced by Ultraman as a child, and he grew up to become a creator himself. I am delighted that families around the world will be able to watch Shannon and his team’s vision for Ultraman on Netflix and foster feelings of courage, hope and kindness.”

While Ultraman may not be as widely recognised in some circles, it holds immense influence in shaping the superhero genre, contributing to the popularity of characters like Godzilla and laying the groundwork for iconic series like Power Rangers. Beyond the animated realm, Ultraman made a triumphant return in the live-action movie Shin Ultraman, directed by Shinji Higuchi.

Ultraman: Rising will premiere on Netflix in 2024.
