‘Tron: Ares’ Begins Filming, Teased With An AI-Centric Plot

The last Tron movie might have been a while ago, but the series has gained an impressive following over the years. Tron is returning to theatres soon with a brand new sequel, Tron: Ares, which recently started filming.

Suicide Squad star Jared Leto plays the titular Ares, a program who ventures into reality from the Grid, with Greta Lee ( Russian Doll ), Evan Peters (American Horror Story), Cameron Monaghan (Gotham), Jodie-Turner Smith (Anne Boleyn), and Sarah Desjardins (Yellowjackets) also in the cast.

Director Joachim Rønning (Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales) lamented the SAG-AFTRA strikes putting a stop to production last year, but was pleased to share that filming was finally underway.

“Today was supposed to be our first day of principal photography on Tron: Ares (a movie subsequently about AI and what it means, and takes, to be human). Instead, we are shut down with over a hundred and fifty people laid off. It’s indefinite, which makes it exponentially harder for everyone,’ wrote Rønning in a 2023 X/Twitter post.

While there is no confirmed release date, there’s plenty of speculation going around about a December 2025 theatrical release. We’re excited to see the finished product once filming ends, and what’s in store for the future of the Tron franchise.
