Beloved Christmas classic The Polar Express warmed the hearts of audiences when it released in theatres in 2004, but if you thought that was the end of it, there’s more in store. Producer Gary Goetzman teased in an interview with Comicbook that a Polar Express 2 is in the early stages of development.
The first movie followed the story of a young boy who boards the mysterious Polar Express and finding other children on board, going on an adventure to rediscover his belief in Santa Claus. The movie was adapted from a children’s book of the same title, written by children’s book author Chris Van Allsburg in 1985. It looks like the sequel will be going off-book with Van Allsburg’s input, as there’s no other material after the ending of the book.
“Who’s artistic property would that be? Would that be?’ It’s just not like, ‘Hey, let’s go do another free sailing! So, they all take time and that’s okay because we don’t mind things going slowly,” said Goetzman in the interview, “But that is trying to be worked out now, for sure, Polar 2. Yes.”
Will it be a Christmas sequel, or will the Polar Express venture into new territory? There’s plenty Polar Express 2 can explore, and with advances in animation since 2004, a new movie would do its stunning landscapes and interiors even more justice.
