Tom Cruise Nixed Streaming Debut For Top Gun: Maverick; Gets 6 Minutes Standing Ovation at Cannes Premiere

Tom Cruise‘s return to the danger zone took a long-awaited 36 years, but his ultimate goal has always been the silver screen. Even as the pandemic caused theatres to close down all over the globe, there was no chance of Top Gun: Maverick heading to streaming platforms.

“That’s not going to happen. Ever,” the actor shared during a talk about his work at the Cannes premiere for the movie. “I make movies for the big screen,” he added, expressing his desire to see high-flying action unfolding on the wide canvas.

As it turns out, the decision to go down a different path from the likes of Black Widow and Birds of Prey paid off. When the final frame of the Top Gun: Maverick hit the screen, the audience at the Grand Palais’ Debussy theatre responded with a standing ovation that lasted for six minutes. It was the highest form of honour for Cruise, who was presented with a “surprise” Palme d’Or and brought to tears by the resounding support.

The festival also dedicated a tribute to the three-time Oscar nominee prior to the screening. French fighter jets took to the skies with streams of blue, white, and red smoke, while a video montage showcased the highlights of his decades-long career.

The Cannes stopover for Top Gun: Maverick is part of a worldwide tour for the film, which is slated to launch on 27 May. It has received rave reviews thus far (watch our review below, or read the full review), and is expected to be among the biggest blockbusters for the Summer 2022 slate.
