‘The Woman King’ Conquers U.S. Box Office With Powerful US$19M Opening

Sony’s The Woman King — which stars Oscars-winning actress Viola Davis (How to Get Away with Murder, Suicide Squad) alongside Lashana Lynch (Captain Marvel, No Time To Die), Thuso Mbedu (The Underground Railroad), and John Boyega (Star Wars: The Force Awakens, Pacific Rim: Uprising) — opened in first place at the box office with an above-expectations US$19 million. This comes after the movie earned an outstanding A+ CinemaScore from audiences, an achievement that fewer than 100 films have attained.

The historical epic, directed by Gina Prince-Bythewood (The Old Guard), tells the story of the Agojie, the all-female army of the Kingdom of Dahomey in West Africa during the 1800s. The film first premiered at the Toronto Film Festival on 9 September 2022, where it received rave reviews from critics praising the film’s all-female cast and action choreography.

Other new releases that took top spots in the box office include A24’s Pearl, a horror prequel to X directed by Ti West, and Searchlight’s See How They Run, a murder mystery set in 1950s London. Both tied for third place after grossing US$3.1 million, with Sam Rockwell (Moon, Iron Man 2), Saoirse Ronan (Lady Bird, Little Women), Adrian Brody (Predators, The Darjeeling Limited), David Oyelowo (Selma, Nightingale), and Ruth Wilson (Jane Eyre, Luther) starring in the latter film.

NEON’s David Bowie biopic Moonage Daydream, which debuted in the same week, rounded out the box office top ten after grossing US$1.2 million, while the rest of the top ten was filled with earlier releases like Bullet Train and Top Gun: Maverick.
