The upcoming documentary Super/Man: The Christopher Reeve Story has unveiled its moving debut trailer, setting the stage for its September release. This three-minute preview begins with iconic scenes of Christopher Reeve as Superman, showcasing his performances from 1978’s Superman to 1987’s Superman IV: The Quest for Peace. However, the focus shifts to a pivotal moment in Reeve’s life, his debilitating horse-riding accident in 1995 that left him paralysed from the neck down.
While many actors have donned the cape, Reeve’s portrayal of the Man of Steel has left an indelible mark on the DC universe, especially after his life took a tragic turn post his superhero roles. Despite his passing in October 2004, Reeve’s influence continues to resonate, with this documentary set to honour his remarkable journey.
Scheduled for a limited theatrical release on 21 and September, the documentary directed by Ian Bonhôte and Peter Ettedgui will later be available on Max. Reeve’s role as Clark Kent/Superman not only set standards for superhero films but also showcased his extensive acting prowess across various roles.
Following his accident, Reeve transformed into a fervent advocate for disability rights and spinal cord injury research, balancing his activism with his cinematic endeavours. Super/Man: The Christopher Reeve Story will feature never-before-seen home footage, exclusive interviews with Reeve’s children, and insights from his Hollywood peers, providing an intimate look at his life and career. Warner Bros. Pictures and DC Studios shared a synopsis as follows:
“The story of Christopher Reeve is an astonishing rise from unknown actor to iconic movie star, and his definitive portrayal of Clark Kent/Superman set the benchmark for the superhero cinematic universes that dominate cinema today. Reeve portrayed the Man of Steel in four Superman films and played dozens of other roles that displayed his talent and range as an actor, before being injured in a near-fatal horse-riding accident in 1995 that left him paralysed from the neck down.
After becoming a quadriplegic, he became a charismatic leader and activist in the quest to find a cure for spinal cord injuries, as well as a passionate advocate for disability rights and care – all while continuing his career in cinema in front of and behind the camera and dedicating himself to his beloved family.”
This documentary not only recounts Reeve’s personal and professional life but also aims to inspire new fans who may not be familiar with his story. It highlights his significant role in advancing treatments for paralysis through the Christopher and Dana Reeve Foundation.
Moreover, Reeve’s legacy will be celebrated in James Gunn’s upcoming 2025 Superman movie, where his son, Will Reeve, is set to make a cameo appearance.
