Star Wars: The Rise Of Skywalker Originally Had Leia Organa As The Last Jedi

Carrie Fisher’s brother, Todd Fisher, has revealed that director J.J. Abrams had originally intended for Princess Leia Organa to be the “Last Jedi” for Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker

In an interview with Yahoo, Fisher shared that his sister was supposed to be the big reveal in the final film.

“She was going to be the big payoff in the final film. She was going to be the last Jedi, so to speak. That’s cool right?”

The concept of a “Last Jedi” in the Star Wars universe was first introduced in the series eighth film which was subtitled The Last Jedi and was most heavily hinted at during the scene with Leia flying through space to make it back to her ship.

“People used to say to me, ‘Why is it that Carrie never gets a lightsaber and chops up some bad guys,” Fisher continued in the interview. “Obi-Wan was in his prime when he was Carrie’s age!”

Though sadly, because of Carrie Fisher’s unfortunate passing, we will not get to see Leia become the force-wielding Jedi warrior she was meant to be but Fisher has previously stated that his sister’s final appearance in episode nine will be something very special. He has also praised the way director J.J. Abrams has repurposed unseen footages of her for the final movie.

“They had eight minutes of footage. They grabbed every frame and analyzed it… and then reverse-engineered it and [got] it into the story the right way. It’s kind of magical,” Fisher said.

Though we still have no idea how Leia Organa will fit into The Rise of Skywalker it is still incredible to know that Carrie Fisher and her character will still be involved in the final film of the Skywalker saga and who knows, maybe in years to come there might be comics released where we’ll get to see Leia in all her Jedi warrior glory.

Fans of the original trilogy will also be happy to know that Wedge Antilles will be making a return for The Rise of Skywalker.

Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker will hit theatres in Singapore on December 19, 2019.
