‘Star Trek: Starfleet Academy’ Casts Paul Giamatti As Season 1 Villain

Emmy-Award-winning legend Paul Giamatti, most known for his work on The Holdovers and HBO TV show John Adams, will board Paramount+’s Star Trek: Starfleet Academy as Season 1’s main antagonist. The casting news comes just after Holly Hunter (Saving Grace) was cast as the academy’s chancellor, adding another Emmy Award winner to the roster.

Giamatti is also a “huge Star Trek fan”, said co-showrunners Alex Kurtzman and Noga Landau, who also added that he was “one of the greatest actors alive … the sheer delight with which he dove in on Starfleet Academy is only surpassed by the gratitude we feel about him joining our incredible cast.”

He will star in a recurring guest role as an antagonistic figure with a sinister connection to the past of one of Starfleet Academy’s cadets, as the show delves into the lives of the academy’s cadets. The show also has the largest contiguous set ever constructed for a Star Trek series, recreating the academy in detail.

Filming is set to begin on the show this summer, with a ten-episode first season. We’re excited to see Paul Giamatti’s role in Star Trek: Starfleet Academy, which is shaping into an exciting Star Trek project.
