‘Spider-Verse’ Animated Short, ‘The Spider Within’, Gets YouTube Release

Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse, the third instalment in the trilogy, would have swung into theatres on 29 March, if the film hadn’t faced an indefinite delay. Fans were left disappointed by the news, but there’s one more surprise: an animated short titled The Spider Within will be available to stream on YouTube on 27 March.

Set during the events of Across the Spider-Verse, Miles Morales experiences a panic attack that forces him to confront the manifestations of his anxiety and learn that reaching out for help can be just as brave an act as protecting his city from evil.

The focus on mental health is a topic Sony seeks to address in collaboration with the Kevin Love Fund, as part of an initiative to get youths to share their mental health struggles. The Spider Within is directed by Jarelle Dampier, writer and storyboard artist at Sony Pictures Animation.

“Miles represents so many of us doing the best we can in our day-to-day lives,” said Dampier,” We don’t often realize all that we’ve been through until our own body forces us to become aware of its experience. My intention is that ‘The Spider Within’ can motivate deeper conversations amongst friends & family about their own mental health journeys — and I hope it feels like a love letter to those who adore Miles Morales.”
