‘Spawn’ Reboot Will Be Edgy and Original “Blumhouse Version of Superhero Movie”

Todd McFarlane’s Spawn movie will be different from any other superhero movie. At least, that’s what producer Jason Blum, of Blumhouse Production, has to say about it at New York Comic Con 2023.

The Spawn movie has been highly anticipated by fans of the Image Comics series of the same name. The movie’s script has been actively in development for years and is expected to hit the screen in 2025. During a press line, Blum hinted that Spawn will be uniquely Blumhouse.

“Yes, I’m going to bring the Blumhouse edge. It’s going to be edgy and original as compared to other superhero movies. It’s gonna definitely feel like the Blumhouse version of a superhero movie,” Blum said.

In the Spawn comics, Al Simmons becomes an assassin for the US government after serving with Force Recon as a Marine and the Secret Service before being recruited to the CIA.

Simmons is betrayed by his agency and killed by his partner and was sent to Hell, where he makes a deal with the devil, Malebolgia, to become a hellspawn. He returns to the land of the living and becomes an anti-hero after searching for a new purpose as he tries to delay his eventual return to hell.

With Blumhouse, who is best known for its horror movies such as M3GAN, Insidious, The Purge and Happy Death Day amongst many others, at the helm, Spawn can finally lean into the horror aspects of the comics.

Something edgy also sounds promising for Spawn as it will help set it aside from other superhero content as of late – especially the ones from big studios Marvel and DC. Series like The Boys and Invincible also serve as great examples that doing something original will pay off.

Whilst plot details of Spawn have not been shared, Jamie Foxx was previously eyed to play the titular character. Creator McFarlane is expected to direct the adaptation.
