Motion capture has long been entrenched in entertainment, virtual reality (VR), and similar industries, but that also means it can be inaccessible for the masses. In Sony’s case, the mocopi 3D mocap system presents an affordable, entry-level alternative for newcomers seeking to explore the tech, but don’t be quick to dismiss it — established studios such as Kojima Productions and A-1 Studios have utilised the device for video game development and animation, respectively.
The setup process is straightforward: attach six straps to the corresponding body parts on both the left and right sides, sync them with the mocopi app via a receiver on phone or PC, and they will be up and running in no time. The base sensors and dongle retail for S$599 and S$149 separately, although users can also purchase them as a set for S$748, with a Pro set (S$1,576) boasting six more sensors, an additional receiver, and miscellaneous accessories.
Between smooth compatibility with streaming support software such as VMC, 3tenePro, Animaze, nizima LIVE, REALITY and VTube Studio, as well as official partnerships with Unity, Unreal Engine, Maya, Blender, and more, it satisfies a range of practical uses. The focus here, however, is on its animation and VR performance, which comes across as decent for its price.
