The Shadow of the Colossus movie, which has now been in development for ten years, may still live to see the light of day according to comments by director Andy Muschietti.
During an interview with Radio TU, Muschietti talked about the status of the film, which is based on the classic 2005 PlayStation 2 video game by Fumito Ueda. “The film has been in development for 10 years and now the possibility of making it opens up,” he explained (via a translation of the interview transcript on Reconectados).
Muschietti added that the film was “an abandoned project by no means”, explaining that the film’s lengthy development time was attributed to working on its budget with Sony Pictures. “Shadow of the Colossus is a cult game, but to make a movie well there is a studio that puts the numbers and says how interested it is to give the director 200, 150 or 100 million dollars. There are different versions of the film and obviously, I want them to give me 200 million, but this is another factor to consider,” he said.
“I love that movie, there is a script that I really like, but there are factors that have nothing to do with your hobby and desire to make it, but with how popular an intellectual property like this is,” he added.
The film’s origins trace back to 2009, with reports that Sony Pictures’ Kevin Misher and writer Justin Marks had been brought on to work on the project. Subsequently, in 2014, Muschietti was attached to the project as director, with little to no updates since then.
Still, Muschietti’s recent comments breathe new hope into the long-running project, so fans can still look forward to a film featuring Wander and Agro’s story coming to life. It’s safe to say that the movie won’t appear on screens anytime soon, however, as Sony seems to be prioritising other projects currently, such as the Helldivers 2 and Horizon Zero Dawn films, as well as the Ghost of Tsushima anime series, both announced at CES 2025.
