Secretlab Ergonomic Recliner Add-On – Review

Secretlab has built a reputation for delivering exceptional ergonomic comfort with its gaming chair range. While the concept remains similar, the Singapore company wants to push the boundaries of ergonomic design with the introduction of an add-on — the Secretlab Ergonomic Recliner Add-On. 

Priced at S$239 / US$199, it is a resting extension for your feet designed to attach to your existing Secretlab chair, transforming your chair into a full-fledged recliner à la a La-Z-Boy. 

Think of this add-on as a rectangle bed measuring 230 x 430mm that sits under the seat of a compatible Secretlab TITAN Evo or Classic Series chair, and pops forward at the pull of a lever. This five-minute installation transforms the chair into a fully adjustable recliner, offering manual adjustments to its position. At zero degrees, the recliner is tucked under and perpendicular to the chair, allowing for a compact seating position, and rises up to 80 degrees. You can adjust this recliner independently from the chair, choosing to lift it to prop your feet, without the need to push back on the seat recline itself.

The Ergonomic Recliner Add-On features its PlushCell Memory Foam cushions and supports up to 30kg, providing ample leg room space and comfort, no matter your body size. 

The cushioning and design alleviate pressure on your legs, helping to reduce strain on the thighs and lower back. While there’s no way to personally verify the improvement in blood circulation without undergoing specific tests, the recliner does provide noticeable comfort during extended use. The multiple adjustable positions allow for better customisation to suit individual preferences, helping to reduce fatigue and feel more rejuvenated after long periods of sitting.

Setting up the recliner is quick and easy, taking very little time. It can be done in under five minutes with no tools required. Simply lay the chair on its back on the provided foam sheet, then remove the seat height and backrest lock levers. Attach the rubber clips to the seat base, secure the recliner over them, and lock the mounting hooks. After removing the safety Velcro straps, reattach all the levers, including the one for recliner adjustment and you’re ready to go.

While installation may be as simple as it sounds, smaller individuals may need assistance with laying the chair on its side due to its weight upon installation.

Using the recliner is as straightforward as it gets. To raise it, just pull the lever up while using your legs to control how far it goes, as this is spring loaded and you use your legs to offer resistance and control its position. Without your legs to guide it, the recliner will extend quickly but not abruptly, so keeping a bit of pressure helps stop it at your preferred angle. However, pushing the recliner back down requires quite a bit of force, which can be challenging for petite users. Sitting closer to the edge of the chair provides a better angle to push it down more effectively using your legs. When not in use, the recliner can be tucked neatly beneath the chair’s base, preserving the chair’s sleek look.

For those eager to try it, Secretlab is releasing both the regular and Founder’s Edition versions on 22 October 2024. The Founder’s Edition, which is priced at S$299 / US$249, includes an added cooling gel that is designed to keep legs cooler during extended use, a quilted design embroidered on the sides of the cushion, and an exclusive Founder’s metal tag, making it a unique collector’s item for early enthusiasts.

Overall, the Secretlab Ergonomic Recliner Add-On is a space-saving add-on that doesn’t require more space like a foot stool, is adjustable, and offers a comfortable, if pricey upgrade, for anyone looking to improve their sitting posture and experience. A word of warning — petite users may face a few challenges with setup and adjustment.
