SDCC 2023: Heave Ho! Netflix Steers ‘One Piece’ Series To 31 August Release With New Trailer

22 July holds special significance for One Piece fans. Where others see a normal day, they bask in the celebratory glow that is One Piece Day. In line with the anniversary spirit, Netflix has unveiled a new trailer for its upcoming live-action One Piece series at San Diego Comic Con 2023, offering an extended look at the characters and presentation before its release on 31 August.

Building on the teaser reel, this near three-minute outing features fresh action sequences involving Luffy, Sanji, Nami, and Zoro (Usopp appears, but isn’t seen partaking in the fights), more glimpses of their camaraderie, and the iconic scene of Shanks putting his straw hat on Luffy’s head. The footage also introduces Koby to viewers for the first time, complete with his pink hair and round-frame glasses.

Sharing his excitement for the trailer announcement, series creator Eiichiro Oda shared a letter containing his thoughts on the live-action adaptation, including the production process, changes from the manga, and the cast and crew.

“I’ll say this. There were no compromises on this show! There was so much that went into it–all of the efforts by the actors, the building of the world and the costumes, presenting things in a way that can only be done in live action, the dialogue–and the entire process of so many people putting their heads together was a festivity in and of itself,” he wrote.

“The producers and the crew are pros at live action, and frankly, they’re One Piece superfans too. By now I just love the production team and cast so much that I can’t wait for them to get the acclaim they deserve from everyone around the world”.

Netflix’s live-action One Piece series stars Iñaki Godoy as Monkey D. Luffy, Mackenyu as Roronoa Zoro, Emily Rudd as Nami, Jacob Romero as Usopp, and Taz Skylar as Sanji. The cast was filled out more than after its first announcement in 2020, with Oda making a promise that nothing will launch until he was satisfied with the final product. Matt Owens and Steven Maeda serve as writers, executive producers, and showrunners, while Oda, Marty Adelstein, and Becky Clements are executive producing.

The synopsis for the eight-episode show reads:

Based on Japan’s highest-selling manga series in history by Eiichiro Oda, One Piece is a legendary high-seas adventure unlike any other. Monkey D. Luffy is a young adventurer who has longed for a life of freedom since he can remember. Luffy sets off from his small village on a perilous journey to find the legendary fabled treasure, One Piece, to become King of the Pirates! But in order to find the ultimate prize, Luffy will need to assemble the crew he’s always wanted before finding a ship to sail, searching every inch of the vast blue seas, outpacing the Marines, and outwitting dangerous rivals at every turn.

One Piece will set sail on Netflix come 31 August. In the meantime, here are more new visuals from the trailer to feast your eyes on:
